***머리말 -어둠이 빛을 이기지 못하더라 - Daum■ 정통과 이단 심포지엄 ■ - 신계훈 박사*** 

유감과 부담을 가지고
그 동안 여러 곳에서 열린 성경 연구 집회에 나가면서 자주 가지게 되는 유감(遺憾)과 부담(負擔)이
있어 왔다. 집회 초청을 받거나 참석한 사람들을 통하여 듣게 되는 말이다. “우리 목사님이 그러시는
데 안식일교회는 이단이라는데요” 미국 서부의 어느 교회 목사님도 “안식일교회는 이단”이라는 제목
으로 설교한 것을 카세트테이프로 제작하여 신자들에게 배포했는데 그 중 하나를 들으면서 실색(失
色)했다. 대낮처럼 밝은 이 정보시대에 이토록 왜곡된 비평이 어떻게 진실처럼 유포되고 있는가?

그런데 이러한 풍토가 조성된 배경에는 그동안 한국 교계에 소개된 이 분야의 출판물이 큰 영향력
을 행사했음을 쉽사리 알게 되었다. 모처럼 국내의 비교종교학계를 대표하는 것으로 인상을 주고 있
는 탁명환 씨가 지은 <기독교 이단연구>라는 책이며, 현재 큰 교단의 신학교 교수로 소개된 박영관
씨의 <이단종파 비판>을 읽으며 커다란 실망과 함께 깊은 충격을 받았다.

비평의 대상으로 삼고 있는 제칠일안식일예수재림교에 대해 아주 기본적인 이해마저 결여한 입장에
서 한 교단에 대하여는 사형 선고와도 같은 이단 선언을 그토록 가볍게 내릴 수가 있는 것인가? 무엇
보다도 이러한 분야에 전문지식을 갖지 못한 일반 사람들이 이와 같은 책들을 분별력 없이 읽음으로
받게 될 영향을 생각할 때 염려와 두려움이 앞선다.

그리스도교 신앙에 관한 비평은 일반 비평과는 다르다. 엄연히 판단의 절대기준인 성경이 있고, 그
위에 시비(是非)를 최종적으로 가려 주시는 재판장이신 하나님이 계시기 때문이다. 그러므로 주관이나
편견에 치우친 비평은 크나큰 영적 손실을 초래하는 비방(誹謗)이나 형제에 대한 참소(讒訴)가 되고
만다. 더구나 이러한 왜곡된 비평 대문에 영혼이 잘못 인도되었을 경우 그 영적인 결과는 보상조차
불가능한 치명적인 것이다. 그릇된 가르침으로 사람을 오도(誤導)하는 영적 지도자들에게 지워지는 두
려운 책임을 우리 모든 교역자들은 피차 통감해야 하겠다(계 22:18, 19; 겔 22:26~28).

그러므로 글이나 말로 백성을 인도할 책임을 진 우리 목사들이나 교계 지도자들은 자신이 속한 교
단의 입장을 무조건 옹호하기에 앞서, 자신의 논증이 양심적으로 성경에 일치하는지에 대해 확신함이
없이는 함부로 글과 말로 표현하는 일을 삼가야 할 것이다.

왜냐하면 아무리 강조했어도 “그들의 말하는 바가 이 말씀에 맞지 아니하면 정녕히 아침빛을 보지
못”(사 8:20)할 것이기 때문이다. 참으로 우리 모두가 사도 바울처럼 “이것을 인하여 나도 하나님과
사람을 대하여 항상 양심에 거리낌이 없기를 힘써야”(행 24:16) 할 것이다.

오랜 침묵을 깨고서
필자는 그동안 몇 인사들이 말이나 출판물을 통하여 일방적으로 이단이라고 규정한 제칠일안식일예
수재림교에 속한 한 사람의 평범한 교역자이다. 그동안 몇 분들이 쓴 비평 서적을 읽으며, 지금까지
그래 온 것처럼 묵묵부답(黙黙不答)으로 일관하는 것이 그리스도인의 바람직한 덕성이 아니라는 강함
느낌을 갖게 되었다. 왜냐하면 “진리의 말씀을 옳게 분변 하며…진리를 알게”(딤후 2:15, 16)하는 것
이 서로의 유익이 된다는 확신에 이른 것이다.
아울러 교회란 어느 교파를 유지하기 위한 인간의 조직이 아니라 “이 집은 살아 계신 하나님의 교
회요, 진리의 기둥과 터”(딤전 3:15)가 되기 때문이다. 그러므로 모든 그리스도인들은 각자의 영원한
운명을 맡기고 사는 자신의 집의 “기둥과 터”가 견고한 것인지 진리의 안전검사(安全檢査)를 거치는
것이 요긴하다고 믿는다. 왜냐하면 말씀의 반석 위에 지은 집은 천재지변을 견디지만 인간 전통의 모
래 위에 기초한 집은 폭풍이 일어 “그 집에 부딪히매 무너져 그 무너짐이 심”(마 7:27)할 것이기 때
문이다.

그래서 오랜 침묵을 깨고 지금까지 제칠일안식일예수재림교를 이단으로 비평해 온 몇 인사들과 지
면을 통하여 담합(談合)하고자 한다. 시간과 공간의 제약을 가진 현실에서의 최선의 방법은 그분들이
벌써 여러 차례 출판을 거듭하며 교계에 널리 소개한 책들을 펴놓고 거기에 직접 인용함으로써 사실
에 근거한 지상(紙上) 심포지엄을 갖고자 한다. 그분들은 이미 저서들을 통하여 하고 싶은 비평의 말
들을 모두 했기 때문에 이제는 이에 대해 대답을 할 차례이다. 비평에 대한 변증(辨證)이 또 다른 편
파적인 비평이 되지 않도록 객관적인 문헌으로 뒷받침했으므로 직접 참고하기 바란다.

그래서 현실에 오해가 있었으면 이해를 돕고 성경을 곡해(曲解)한 결과이면 이를 밝혀 마침내 “모
든 사람이 구원을 받으며 진리를 아는 데 이르기를 원하시”(딤전 2:4)는 하나님의 뜻을 이루려는 데
에 이 책을 쓰는 목적이 있다.

하나님께서 우리의 이 작은 노력을 크게 축복하시기를 진심으로 기도드리며, 지면을 통하여 대하게
되는 “여러분들에게 훌륭한 일을 시작하신 하나님께서는 그 일을 계속하실 것이며 마침내 그리스도
예수께서 다시 오시는 날 완성하실 것입니다. 이것이 나의 신념입니다”(빌 1:6, 공동번역).
